Cooking While They Work

stir fryWhy does it seem such a chore most days he works to get a meal completed? I cook for four adults in my house. It’s really not a big difference any day of the week. Yet if he’s at work I can almost guarantee that dinner time will be odd.

Right now we’re in the middle of another 24 day challenge so I’m being really good about food. I’ve also noticed the poor eating habits the teens have as I’ve let them slack. This is exactly how and when bad habits are formed. I have to change the habits in a positive way. Not easy with teens that could go cranky at any time for no reason lol

I tend to cook plenty of food when I make a meal. 1) I like leftovers for hubby and I for lunch 2) This way I can send food with him to work. Depending on the shift they may not have time to eat or they may have to snag what they can. 3) The kids and I have the leftovers on the nights he’s working.

Last night I made stir fry and it worked out well. Non-stop running so stir fry is quick and still healthy. I made a ton of it so I’ll be freezing some for later use. That is what I really love to do. Fill the freezer so I don’t have to worry about it. Our chest freezer was leaking so we had to get rid of it and now I’m having to contend with just two normal fridge freezers. Not easy after having so much room before. It’s going to take a lot of relearning.

What’s your fav or go to meal when they are working? Do you cook or is it almost always takeout?

Life got crazy and we got lazy with food. I am being hyper organizational right now with meal planning, which has been good for us. I cook for 5 or 6 depending on if he’s home, again not a big deal. My little one has eaten adult portions since she was a 17lb 18 month old, so I make a ton of food.

But, when he is on shift, I get to make things with cheese. My hubby HATES cheese, even the smell of it. So, I plan the cheesy meals I was depriving myself of, for when he works.

Your hubby and I would have wonderful meals together since I can’t have cheese or any dairy for that matter anymore :(

It’s funny how the meal planning goes out the window when it gets busy, yet it’s the thing that will save us so much time and aggravation. lol

it’s just the two of us, and I find it SO HARD to cook when he’s on shift. I did better this week, but sometimes it’s just too easy to grab a box of cereal and call it good.

Mariah, have you tried purposely making leftovers so you can just reheat them on shift nights?

Like Trina does, I cook the things FF hates for dinner when he’s on duty – like breakfast and cheesy things.

But some nights, like you, I shortcut since I have a baby food eater and a picky preschooler. Why put all the effort into something only I am going to appreciate? Might as well just eat a sandwich and move on.

I let dinners get sloppy when hubby was in fire class. We have adjusted back to normal (what defines normal? there is no normal with a pager in the house) and I’m trying to get better with dinners. Actually having to cook again, instead of doing whatever the kids want…. and eating whatever they left behind after getting them to bed.

It’s really tough to think on what meal you should prepare everyday especially if there are few options as well as time options. You have a wise decision and distribution when it comes to excess food. I also don’t like to throw foods easily if it’s not spoiled. I sometimes cook it again to another meal. By the way, the photo above looks delicious, I saw that it’s yakisoba with tofu noodles. I think I already tasted it.

The noodles are great and so much healthier. You can buy them at most grocery stores now. Definitely setting a plan in place will help. I even work on planning for the leftovers. Like tonight I know we’ll be super busy so the other night I made extra jambalaya and it will be reheated for tonights dinner.
