We’ve had quite a few firefighter’s lately buy memberships to the Fire Wife Sisterhood for their wives or girlfriends.  I must admit.  It’s just the sweetest thing to get these emails from these men who care so much!  So we asked a couple of them to let us “get inside their head” and explain to us why they were compelled to do this.  Because I know plenty of firemen who won’t even “like” our facebook page because it’s a bit too girly (HINT:  This is why we are also the home of FireFamily.Life!  It takes two to make a marriage and family work so stick around here men!)

Here’s their stories:

photoI have been in the fire/ems service for 20+ years (I stopped counting at 20) and have seen many good firefighter have to quit and turn in their gear because of issues at home with their wife.

As volunteers we are always running out the door for calls, no matter if it’s Christmas, child’s Birthday, Date night or just a Thursday night. We have classes to stay current, training to stay on top of our game and regular meeting nights, and this all causes stress for the wife and kids who stay behind and wonder if dad or husband is going to come home in an hour, 2 hours or sadly sometimes not at all.

When Hillary started talking about Fire Fighter Wife facebook page, and all the fun she was having talking with other ladies who are in the same boat as her, I knew she was onto something. She understood why I do what I do, and that it was a giant weight off my shoulders that she supported my passion And hasn’t fought it all the time. She has people who have been living with FF for many years, both volunteer and career FF wives who have been there and done it and have learned how to handle it, And are great enough to share their experiences with other to help them deal with whatever happens.

This is a great relief for me, and for Hillary! She is on the site several times a day and is proud of being a member!! She has made friends on the site and is talking about things and now understands different things about the FF service that she didn’t understand before. I owe the ladies of FFW A great big THANK YOU!!!  Thru your experiences and friendship you have helped Hillary to take the pager going off in stride and not stress out over the call. Deep down I know she is stressed, heck, even after all these years, I still get stressed when it’s a fully involved structure fire, Thinking who is on the rigs, who is in the house and all the things I have to do once on scene, it’s a giant relief not having to worry about my loved ones Stressing out as much because I know she can go on the site, and talk to other wives who either are going thru the same thing, or have just gone thru it and together they can talk to each other and get thru it with limited stress. That to me is priceless.

Yes, I purchased Hillary a year membership and I will continue doing it year after year so she has this place with these amazing Women to talk to and get thru all the things I do for the public I serve. I highly recommend that ALL Fire Fighters purchase this for your loved ones.  The price is a very small price to pay for their peace of mind!

Here’s another view from Clint:

Why did I buy a membership for my significant other?

Have you ever bought your wife “I’m sorry” flowers? I have. Most of the time it was an exercise in some kind of voodoo magic ritual; I wasn’t 100% sure what was wrong, just that she was not happy and giving her flowers (or chocolate) like an offering seemed to let her know that I wasn’t really a bad guy and she should not strike me with some curse.

However, a divorce and another failed relationship later, I have come to the realization that there are better things one can buy, especially if one is a firefighter. The stresses of our job and schedule affect our significant others more than we know, and while flowers are a nice gesture, they don’t last.

Enter Firefighterwife.com. What our ladies really need is support. To us men this means one thing (usually beer, big screen tv’s, internal combustion engines, and bullets), but to a woman it mostly means talk. Talk is the nectar of the female bee hive. It is how they learn, among other things, how to deal with life’s problems and stressors. And fellas, we and our jobs are huge stressors for them. Our wives need to know that they are not alone. There is little else that makes life seem more hopeless than feeling alone.

A membership to Firefighterwife.com for your spouse or significant other may be the best investment you can make. Do you think your spouse or families are expensive? Try divorce; your house, 401K, pension, bank account, all of it takes a huge hit and sets you back. Not to mention the emotional toll which is added onto the already heavy burden we get at work. When you have a spouse that is on the same page as you, you can both make plans for the future and work on common goals that will pay off in the long run.

I purchased a membership to Firefighterwife.com for my significant other because I am taking the long view of our relationship. I want our relationship to work. I want her to be able to understand what I do and why I do it, and I want to understand her; how my being gone when everything seems to break affects her. I want her to know that she is not alone; the connections made in this private, non-judgmental support network can be key to developing the skills necessary to live with firefighters and our schedules and more than that; thrive over the long run.
