Reggie Day 3

A day in the life of a full-time working-lawyer- mom married to a fire Captain.  ~ Day 3 ~

Plan for today:

  1. Pack
  1. Company Conference
  1. FaceTime with Son before flight home
  1. Talk to Husband before flight home

6:00am – Wednesday

Well, looks like I will end this business trip the same way it started: 4 hours sleep and rushing to get packed (so typical of me).   These trips are so exhausting, but at least I have the support of my amazing husband taking care of everything while I am away!  Being married to a firefighter and his 24/48 schedule has really helped me move ahead in my career in many ways because I don’t have to worry about what is going on at home while I’m working (well, on non-shift days!)  Ok, no time to dawdle… I take a quick shower, got dressed, packed and am out the door to the conference room with 5 minutes to spare before the conference reconvenes!  At least I know how to get to the conference room this time!

8:00am-10:00am

It’s another beautiful sunny day and we are spending it inside a conference room.  Big Boss, Big Kahuna, and the rest of Executive Management talk about how awesome 2014 will be and how much they appreciate all our hard work, and blah, blah blah (translation: don’t expect a bonus or at least a real bonus) Ok, so moving on – can we go now?

10:00am-10:15am

Break time!  Time to enjoy the sun for 15 whole minutes! (during which time I actually got sunburned!)  Oh, yeah and check that Blackberry (or as Husband calls it “the paperweight”)

10:15am-11:00am

To end our conference, how about 45 minutes on financing! Again, I know you are all very jealous!

12:30pm

Finished packing, changed my clothes and checked my Blackberry (again!) and checked out of my room. Finally, time to go home to my family!  Well, first, a quick lunch with Big Boss, my outside counsel friend and several others.  “What time does Husband get off?”  Not until the morning – it’s a 24 hour shift.  “Yeah, but he’s just on-call for 24 hours, right?” No, he’s not “on-call,” he’s actually at the station.  “For 24 Hours?” Yes, for 24 hours.  And REPEAT…  For a bunch of smart lawyers, they seem to have a hard time with this concept.  It keeps our life interesting – for sure!

2:00pm

And, we’re off to the airport.  Chatting with my outside counsel friend, I realize how lucky I am to be in-house! Law firms are so cut-throat and I am happy to be free of that pressure!

3:30pm

Husband texts me – “Done forget to call the Kid before your flight takes off!” Seriously, what would I do without him.  I totally lost track of time!  So, with 15 minutes to spare before boarding, I FaceTime with Kid and tell him on my way home!  He’s excited (mostly because he knows I’ll have a toy for him) and because even though I wasn’t gone long, I have been travelling a lot lately.  Good Night Kid, I’ll see you in the morning.

3:35pm

I call Husband, we chat for oh, maybe 2 minutes before he gets a call. Bye, Love you, see you in the morning!

4:15pmPT-10:30CT

Flying home!  I have a WHOLE row to myself! Thank you flying gods – no middle person with their elbow in my rib for this flight!!  Maybe I’ll catch up on a little sleep!

11:30pm CT

I’m Home!  Kid is asleep.  So thankful for my Mother-In-Law who takes care of Kid on shift days – and for staying so late tonight!  Husband is on shift, so, unlike my counterparts, I have to wait until morning to see my Husband!  Good Night!
