Okay fire wives…

Things are about to get serious.

There are only (XX) days until Christmas!

Christmas for us? That means another holiday where one person will be missing from Christmas morning. The schedule is not on our side this year but we have figured a way to make the day special. We are FireWives and this is just what we do, right?

But, that doesn’t mean the rest of the world stops moving forward while I might be wishing my firefighter was home with us on one special morning. There are holiday events to attend, baking to be done, and gifts to be bought. Oh, the gifts.

{panic, panic, panic, panic!}

Presents to be purchased, cards to print and send, not to mention all of that holiday party planning…

On top of it all, you have kids that you want to make special memories with, and a spouse that needs some attention during this crazy season too! Rightfully so though! The holidays are focused on family and the kids day in and out, and for our tired firefighters they are walking into the home tired, shaken, and out of sorts. Remember, we have been running the house, the holiday, EVERYTHING while they are gone – but what happens when they come back?

It can be a struggle to get back in the swing of things after a shift (trust, I have been there!). This time of year only compounds the stress. He sees the worst that families have to go through during the holidays and to walk back into our happy home… well, that can take a minute to shake off.

So what can WE do?

I have always heard the term, “Date Your Spouse” and thought I knew what it meant. It wasn’t until I became a Fire Wife that I realized the work that goes into this.

I realized I need to be energy in our relationship when he is burnt out. I need to make the plans to keep the spark alive during the times he is tired – and I expect the same from him. Here is what has worked for us:

  1. Monthly Date Nights – I have his schedule a year in advance, so I plan at least one night out a month that we can both look forward to
  2. Surprise Splurge Meals – We are a pretty healthy family so I know that a “splurge meal” is a fun surprise to have all of his favorite foods ready for him.
  3. “Downstairs” Dates – Um… yep, they are exactly what they sound like! As soon as the kids go to bed we have a date. It can be a movie, cooking together, playing a board game, – anything! We are downstairs and they are upstairs… everything else, up to your imagination! Like, for the holidays – we can wrap presents and drink wine together – ha!

These have worked great for me and I am so excited that this holiday season I will be able to add in a little something new, thanks to our wonderful partners, The Dating Divas.

They created an AMAZING Christmas advent countdown printable pack that focuses JUST on your spouse.

Ready-to-be made memories, and all you need to do is download and push “print”!

This AH-mazing pack, showers your leading man with compliments, acts of service, and a healthy dose of fun Christmas date nights all month long!

I seriously can’t get enough of it! Christmas can sometimes be too centered on the kids, so I love that the Divas have taken the time to help everyone focus on their spouse too. They rock that way!

There are three types of “surprises” for your spouse each night:

  • COMPLIMENT using one of their card prompts
  • SERVICE ACT of kindness {darling coupons included}
  • DATE IDEA to celebrate the season and have fun!

I am grabbing mine ASAP so that I can surprise my firefighter with a little something special this year. I don’t know about you, but it feels like everyone is ready for 2016 to be over. I know it has been a hard year for a lot of us and I want to make sure this last month is a special one that we look back on and smile.
