What a Week

I had deemed this week the week of no. You may have seen that on the forum. You’ll have to log in to be able to read the post btw. Thankfully I did deem it so. I had a lot going on.

My oldest got her license finally on Tuesday. I can tell you that yes, it does make a difference living in district to how I feel about this. We live in district and she looks so much like me there is no mistaking who she is before checking her id. Then we know a lot of people in the town next to us that are fire as well so we have it covered there too. Then cops in both towns and the county cops. We’re golden for coverage. lol

The first day we were sending her out it was raining cats and dogs. It’s the Seattle area, this is how it’s always going to be. Nothing like getting over my fear of her driving alone by throwing her out in a downpour to pick up her brother. I wanted to send money with her and promptly forgot. I remembered well that when I first took my brother out we didn’t go home. Thankfully the youngest had some cash on him because of course he texted they were going to the store. Aww adult bonding, brings a tear to the eye. OK, eyes, stop picking on me.

I had a major proposal to write up that day and it was completely out of my comfort zone. Like freaking out, out of my comfort zone. It didn’t pan out at this time but so many things have come from me taking that step that I’m stuck with a permagrin. I grew a lot on Tuesday. I also opened up a lot to a group that I’ve been a member of for many years. Creeped them out with my honesty but that’s how it goes lol

Now we’re off to the start of a new month. This month hubby only has his “k” day off. Then he also has 2 extra days that he took as shift trades to cover the most amazing summer we’ve ever had planned. Which is a good thing because it’s also the summer before our oldest goes into her senior year.

The winds are a changin’ I’m going along for the ride quite well at the moment. Other moments not so well. But I’m excited for the future. The possibilities, the fun, the personal growth. What are you looking forward to this week?

Merry Christmas to my FireFamily

Oh what a day!

No, I didn’t schedule this post. I’d actually planned on it being a Christmas Eve post but I missed that by a bit. lol It’s 1:30am right now as I start this post and it’s been busy, busy, busy. But it’s been very cool since hubby was on shift and very different than other holiday shifts. It could have been pretty sad easily and I’m thankful for the help making it more fun.

I’d like to start with a disclaimer that I’m up so late because I had to finish my Mom’s present. Of which I could have finished how long ago? My fault completely there. BUT then I also had to wrap other presents. See, hubby was busy harassing me to make a list for over a month of what I wanted for Christmas, but he just made his final list 4 days ago. Yes, that gave me a ton of shopping time didn’t it? Plus it wasn’t the same stuff he was talking about a month ago, then not the same stuff that he said he wanted 2 weeks ago. Got stuff off his list an finally figured out what to get my family as well. Next year I really need to plan that out better.

Thankfully, I was able to buy his Kindle Fire straight out of my own money so I could hide the purchase. We’ll see how it youtubes. That’s the biggest thing he will be doing with it so I think it will work just fine.

When he works on a holiday it kinda sucks. But I try putting new traditions in when I can. If I need them, then of course the kids do as well. I have brought these kids up with odd traditions because of our odd schedule over the years with construction and fire. I was going in with a combo of some previous years plans before the talk went out to have Christmas Even dinner at the station.

Working at the main station means planning any event there can be kind of a joke. It’s generally really busy. However, we all tried to plan for that. We have a Ronco Rotisserie and used it to cook the beef. It didn’t take long and they could set it and forget it. The kids and I were coming in during that time so there was no emergency issue. None of us want to burn down the station. How embarrassing would that be?! All the other wives brought in dishes to share. We had PLENTY of food.

The guys were just cleaning up and most of the dishes done when the tones went off. We got darn lucky with the timing. It was just us girls with the kids waiting to see how long the call would be. We’re all comfortable with each other so it was different than hanging out has been in the past. Fun time chatting a bit, catching up and eventually giving up on the guys coming right back. Lot’s of other stuff we all had to do.

The kids and I then drove around looking at Christmas lights for a couple of hours and annoying each other with music. I wish I had enough power outlets to create the smurf house in red at our house. It was amazing and pictures just can’t give you even close to an idea of how bright it is. Their neighbors must have to get blackout shades to sleep.

I hope you have a Merry Christmas with your family no matter where they may be this year. Look at creating new traditions wherever possible :)

Warrior Movie Review

I told you earlier this week that I got a couple of tickets to screen the new movie WARRIOR and how excited I was to go see it with hubby. By the way you still have until August 29th to nominate the warrior in your life for a grand prize of a private hometown screening. Seeing as we’re all firefighter wives here we’ve all got at least one person to nominate easily. Or maybe the warrior is YOU for all the battling you do for your family?! Just get that nomination in quick.

For those of you unfamiliar with the movie, it’s about two estranged brothers who are training for the fight of their lives. Between financial issues, major personal issues and the problems that tore them apart, much more than MMA is brought to the ring at sparta.

I grew up watching boxing with my Dad and we watch the MMA pay-per-views whenever possible. My daughter also wrestles (son will this year!). I love a good fight and I’m a sucker for the underdog in the cage, on the mat or in a movie. Just something about that fighting spirit and never stopping until you achieve your goal that gets me every time.

Hubby and I rarely get out to the movies just the two of us. I know all you parents can relate, it’s difficult to bump it up on the priority list. I was happy not to be forcing a chick flick on him here.  However, if you aren’t into the fights then it’s full of some serious eye candy girls! Hey, there are ring girls for the guys too. But if you can’t watch the fights on tv then I’m not sure if you’ll love Warrior as much as I did. It’s full of awesome fight scenes.

Even though I know the fights were choreographed (duh, it’s a movie), I was still cringing, ducking and wanting to yell at the screen. I’m not very quiet when I watch sports. lol They did a great job with making the fight scenes look real.

The story line was surprisingly good. I wasn’t expecting a packed story line for this genre of movie. I know it’s technically a drama, but with the theme of the movie I expect it to be more heavy on the action and leave it at a basic story. There were quite a few battles going on that weren’t physical. Conflicts in personal relationships, work issues, broken family dynamics, just like in real life.  Yet with all of the stories going on it’s easy to follow. It’s not jumping around from person to person, everything is interconnected.

The humor was great. Tom and Tess have some very funny moments. She cracked me up quite a few times with her digs. Their marriage comes off realistically because of the joking while dealing with major problems.  You have to love the high school principal as well.

I loved the movie. I definitely recommend seeing it in theaters so you can cringe and duck with the blows. I’m looking forward to my son seeing it, I know he’s going to like it a lot too.

Warrior opens next Friday, September 9th. Hopefully, not long after we will hear that someone has created a true sparta ;)

For the record, it’s 3 months until wrestling season. Momma will start their training this weekend. This movie gave me the bug. I can’t wait to see them on the mat again!

Conference? Meet-up?

Well this is a quick post as I know business wise not to post a lot of info. But, how interested would you be in doing a firefighter wife/girlfriend conference?

If you are interested, what topics would you want information about? Believe me, I have a ton of topics to touch on from comments and forms filled out. BUT I want to especially hit those that may actually attend a conference for us girls.

One more question to my loyal followers, what time of year is best for you? For me personally it would have to be October or the next possible opening will be March after wrestling is done and I have an option to breath lol Then we have the option of how long can you get away? 2, 3, or 4 days total? That will have an effect on the topics. Man, I see I need to put a poll together to help with this after I choose a date.

You can see how this is something that can blossom and it’s been in the works for a long while. I’m ready to move forward ladies, so who would seriously be in? I have 6 spots in my camping trailer and a few more in the house as well to get as many as possible here lmao

Being a Volunteer Wife

I was chatting with LaDonna on twitter the other night about some topics for the blog.  She brought up the whole volunteer vs paid aspect.  In a kind of odd way I very briefly touched on our volunteer days in last weeks post about negative postings.

She mentioned how no one can understand the hours put in at a volunteer department unless they have been there. Not even the other firewives. I totally agree with her. But not all volunteer departments nor volunteers are the same. My husband was very dedicated to volunteering for the 6 years he did. The two years of it we were going through a merge and it was hectic, but he still kept up with drill and trying to make calls. Making calls is not easy once the paid guys are around full-time lol But isn’t what I want to post about.

Being the wife of a “paid” firefighter doesn’t even come close to the time spent alone as a volunteer wife. There is no comparison to the amount of holidays I spent with family and the kids while he went on calls. But I’m so thankful it put me in the mindset it did. While he was a volunteer we didn’t have many active volunteers anymore. If he didn’t go then I knew it literally meant that someone could die.

He worked a ton of hours at his construction job and commuted a minimum of 2 hours a day in heavy traffic on top of that. My work and school put us at odd times to see each other so hopefully one of us could be around with the kids since they weren’t very old at that time. I’m forever thankful for my Mom and my neighbor girls who were a blessing in those days so I could get any form of scheduling and get to class when calls came up.

We all know that calls come at night but imagine having to get up when you’ve worked heavy construction all day and have the delight of getting up again at 5:30am. Sleep is pretty priceless and necessary. I was his tones for 6 years. The pager would go off and he would rarely hear it. I would make the call if it was necessary for him to go. I took into account the day of the week and who else I knew was in town, also the seriousness of the call. Yeah, don’t judge me harshly, my families health and well-being will always come first and I wasn’t about to let him put that at risk. Of course if it was a fire I’d make him wake up and decide on his own. lol

But many, many, many nights I would be the one to shake him awake and tell him he needed to go on such-n-such call. I even got used to the “regulars” addresses. Can you see why it’s been such a difficult transition for me NOT to have this pager around since he got on paid? I knew everything that was going on for 6 years and then BAM I’m out of the loop. lol

We planned every event with a contingency plan for if he was on a call. As a rule we had all major holidays at our house so he could attend as much of the meal/event as possible. I have fond memories of a 4th of July spent with two of his buddies while he was on a wildland call that was truly nothing lol It was the first time I’d met these guys and we had fun lighting off all the fireworks hubby had bought.

Being a volunteer wife was 24/7/365 and no support for me. I don’t regret the volunteer days at all. I wish that I had been more secure in myself and had more time to push and make other wives come together, but truly I didn’t have it in me as they probably didn’t either. Those volunteer days made us both appreciate his being career now even more. It’s good to remember how we struggled, overcame and he still wanted to do this. I’m proud of him for all the work he’s put in to this career and how well he’s provided for us while going after his dream and calling.

It’s impossible to look back and regret how hard the work was to get to where we are. There are so many that never struggled and they take where they are for granted. It makes us angry to see that. We’ll never be that and I’m thankful for our appreciation for where we are.

Cee Lo Tribute Video

I already loved Cee Lo’s tunes but now he adapted “Forget You” into a tribute song. I know you’ll love it! Just click share below and pass it to your twitter, facebook, email or other accounts :)

Quick Update From Fellow Wife

I got an email today from the wife who’s FF was severely injured in a fire. I’m happy to report back that she was able to take him home last Friday. He’s feeling well enough that he is bummed out about not being able to go on any fires for some time yet. Typical huh? lol Any complaining done would personally be welcome news to my ears :)

She thanks everyone for their support.

Happy St. Patty Day!

I love this holiday! It’s just for fun. This year we are celebrating very differently. Oh don’t get me wrong, the corned beef is already slow roasting in the oven and hubby is bringing home the cabbage and carrots to toss in. But we’re going out on the town after we eat!

We’ve had tickets to go see Aaron Lewis for months. There were supposed to be a few other fire family going, but tickets were already sold out. I absolutely LOVE going to concerts and love great tunes. Country, heavy metal, punk, I appreciate it all. But there is just not much hotter than a guy getting up on stage with only a guitar to hide behind. Course, that may be because I already got the firefighter ;) LOLOL

I’m hoping for the luck o’the Irish at the casino before the concert and looking forward to a date night with just hubby. Don’t get me wrong, I know we’d have had a blast if everyone had gotten tickets. But some days we really have to go out just the two of us.

Plus, today marks the 21st anniversary of our first date. We should probably spend it just the two of us laughing about the early dates.

Be safe everyone and have a great St. Patty’s Day and night!

Wrestling Season is Over

She had such a great showing. I’m so very proud of her and excited that she found a sport she can get excited about. Even after all this hard work, tons of practice and quite a few losses she has set a goal of going to state next year.

She placed 7th at regionals and was one match away from going to state. So close! Frustrating of course, but darn good job for first season ever stepping onto the mat. It’s awesome to see her grow and especially awesome to see her determination to win showing up. Next year she’ll be able to learn more moves and finish more of these basics that she already has ingrained and are coming naturally. I’m beaming with pride for how well she’s done.

State is next week and she still needs to go to practice next week in order to get her letter. We have 3 out of our 9 going to state! I’m not sure what the boys team ended up sending yet as they were at a different location.

She’ll be on to track after this and I’m excited for that also. I was big into track so I’m looking forward to seeing where the coaches use her. Even though she wants to do the mile or more, I doubt they do that. She beats most of the boys in sprints so I know where she’ll be. She’s her Momma’s girl after all ;)

After track it will be training for next wrestling season. I’ll put this degree to work for something productive!
