It took me a little bit to get this picked. Getting sick and then wrestling pushed the pick back a few days farther than I wanted.

Congrats to Jolyn G from the fanpage who won the t-shirt from firefighterswives.net.

Then the winners of the wrist bands are:
Duane K
Jamie S
Lauren S
Leslye K
Jen B

I am trying to contact everyone right now, but due to everyone’s unique privacy settings on facebook it may take a little bit. I completely understand this, but messages have been sent or emailed to everyone. If you see your name here and haven’t heard from me this it’s probably a privacy setting thing! Please leave a comment here and I will email you back. All emails are kept private when you comment, but don’t add it to the body of the comment.

This doesn’t have to be the end of sharing though. Keep the pictures coming on the fanpage. I love to see them :)

Thank you all for entering and helping to promote both firefighterwife.com and firefighterswives.net.

Off to Wrestling Regionals!

I haven’t posted near enough about this as it’s been a huge thing for our family the last few months. Our daughter sprung on us the week before practice started that she was going to wrestle. Awesome, we love wrestling. Oh boy, I had absolutely no idea what a commitment for me this was going to be. She doesn’t drive and the girls team doesn’t practice right after school. Our district has no money so I was also helping to transport to tournaments on weekends and meets during the week. I put 200 miles on my suburban in the first 10 days! Add the carpool weeks (every third week) and there have been many days I’ve made 4 or more trips to the high school.

But it’s been totally worth it to see her enjoy a sport finally. She’s gotten so much better since the beginning of the season and it’s amazing how strong she’s gotten. She’s done an incredible job of dieting and dropping weight even through the holidays. All her friends were eating junk food at the New Year’s Eve party and she was busy with her salads and fruit with a little side of gold fish crackers. WOW.

All her hard work, including double practices twice a week, is paying off. She took fourth in districts last Saturday and we’re off to regionals this weekend. She’s never been very competitive by nature but she found it last weekend. Hubby and I are quite competitive so it was brutal to see her be so ok with losing. Don’t get me wrong, we know it’s her first time ever wrestling, but there just wasn’t a fire. On Saturday she wanted on that podium in a bad way. AND she did it! So freaking proud of her!

Hubby is scheduled to work next Saturday but our department is so awesome. He put out an email to switch shifts with someone and had a ton of emails back immediately. So now he gets to go with us while we battle to move on to state! Very thankful for the guys who understand how important family is and are willing to switch days.

7 of the 9 girls on our team moved on to regionals and I don’t even know how many of the boys. Our boys team wiped out all the other teams with almost double the points of second place. It’s going to be so exciting to cheer on all the girls on Saturday. I’ll make sure and report back how it goes.

It’s my birthday and I wanna do it up big.  I want my fanpage to explode, the blog to blow up and it would be awesome to promote the heck out of our giveaway sponsor Firefighterswives.net.  Basically, I’m willing to bribe you into promoting me.  It’s the American way after all ;)

This giveaway is going to be a little bigger and even better.  It’s for the vneck t-shirt for you or someone you love.  I also have 5 firefighter’s wife wrist bands to give away.

When the Crazy Schedule Works

We can’t count on holidays off, or weekends, or even what time shift will end. But there are so many times I’m thankful for how well this crazy schedule works for us.

Our daughter has been wrestling this year and unfortunately hubby has had to miss at least half the meets and tournaments because of work. I’m sure there have been days I’ve driven him crazy with a million texts as I sit alone at a tournament. I know he really wanted to be there too. For those that don’t know, with travel time, these tournaments are 10-14 hour days for me and mostly leaning towards 14. I had no idea what we were getting into when my daughter told us a week before practice started lol

Thinking back too our construction job days and that schedule, he probably wouldn’t have made many of the events at all. Commute would have gotten him home too late to see her weekday meets and he generally worked 6 days a week so tournaments would have been out. Forget taking a day off back then, there was no vacation or sick pay. Never has a day gone by that I miss those days, even at the beginning when we struggled with the income difference.

I’m truly thankful for this crazy schedule because it allowed us to get out of town as a family for a big tournament. No worry about needing a day off because it hit on a four day.

He barely had any sleep for 5 days so he wasn’t much of a road trip companion on the way there, but I’ll forgive him because at least he was awake and drove. I’m sure I annoyed him enough with my chatter to keep him wide awake. Some of us just have our gifts lol

Three days of very little responsibility and I’m now ready to rock out the work week. We got to meet quite a few of the other parents (boys team) and went out with them one night as well. Definitely nice to unwind after a long tournament day with other parents in the same boat.

Yes, there are many times that his schedule keeps us from doing things as a family. But the times he’s available make up for every day we miss him.

Where to Find More Support?

Kelly contacted me for some places for more support. Her husband starts work today! YEAH, CONGRATS! What an exciting and scary time. The adjustment is the hard part. But Kelly understands that this is a whole family change and just by asking for places for support I know she’ll be moving in the right direction.

There is firewives.comforums for wives and girlfriends if you’re looking for that kind of chatting.

Then blogs I suggest are:

Stop, Drop and Blog is a must stop for further advice on how another couple are making this craziness work. She has younger kids so she has a different perspective. I didn’t start my blog until my kids were a little older so unless I’m asked specific questions I tend to forget how I did deal with certain things. She and I tend to have a similar outlook on things and I believe she may have been one of the first fire wife blogs I found to follow. Her pictures are wonderful and she’s back to work as well. I’m sure you can ask her questions about dealing with it all and she will write back.

Hydrant Girl has a unique perspective as she’s married to a firefighter and we’ve followed as she’s become fire/medic herself. Well she was fire already, but she just did a ton of training to become medic. Traveling a ton, training to become a medic. She’s been rocking it and still updating her blog as well. Not an easy task.

Fire Wife Katie is another blogger I like to follow. She too has younger kids so I know you will get some great ideas from her. Not to mention she’s one talented “crafter”. I wish she lived closer, I’d just hire her to come in and decorate! I get much more than firelife commiseration from her blog. I get inspiration to actually do those many crafts I have lined up in my craft room.

A Firefighter’s Wife has all ages of children. They have been together for a while and she brings her faith to her blog as well. If you aren’t into religion, please don’t think you won’t get anything from her blog. I’m not religious and I love visiting her blog and can really appreciate how much their faith plays a part in their lives. She’s not preachy. It’s just the way they live their life and it’s working wonderfully for them. She homeschools, is crafty and she’s surrounded herself with really wonderful people locally that help. That is such a key.

Wow, I know a lot about some of you don’t I? Is this creepy? lmbo

Keep me updated Kelly and please feel free to contact me with any questions. I don’t mind keeping questions anonymous as well. That goes for everyone else as well. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you’d like to throw out to fire wives. You’ll usually get a few different perspectives to mull over.

One Foot In The Black Review

I finally set more time aside and finished One Foot In The Black by Kurt Kamm.  I’m sorry I didn’t do it sooner.  Just a quick disclaimer for our friends from the FTC, I was sent this book for free to read and review.  HOWEVER, Kurt understands and wants me to give my honest opinion about the story.  Any one that knows me or has been following this blog for even a little while knows I can only give my honest opinion):  A big thank you to Kurt for the book to review, I did enjoy it.

Many times reading it I would forget that this wasn’t based on a true story.  It read like an autobiography and I mean that in a good way.  It kept me reading easily and the first night I read over 1/3 of the book.  I got into finding out about Greg’s life and how he moved into wildland from so far across the country.  I was hooked into reading more as if this was a real person’s life.  A definite sign of a good book in my opinion.

I can’t vouch for all of the wildland lingo and actual training.  I know enough to follow along, but not enough to test if the book is completely correct.  My husband has his card, but we have it very different as far as training here locally and he’s not on the wildland team.  I know that Cali is so much different because of the massive amount of wildland firefighters needed each year.

I’ll be honest in saying I had to do some skimming towards the end.  I read enough to keep up with some conversations and read more than I really wanted in some parts.  I don’t want to give away a big part of the book, but due to personal experiences I just found I couldn’t read it and relive it.  However, I will say that I found how Greg dealt with the situation to be quite true to how I’ve seen some others work through it.  His statements and thoughts to be those I’ve heard personally in my life.

I know that my husband wanted to read this book, but after reading it I know it’s not the best idea.  Over-protective?  Probably.  It’s difficult to know if bringing up past experiences helps in the healing or hinders it.  I was unsure whether to bring up the book or just ignore it in my house after reading.  I did get to go a while and he mentioned it.  I told him how it went and he agreed it wasn’t a good idea for him.

I do recommend this book.  I really should come up with a rating scale for books as I review them.  Let’s do 1-5, 5 being the best and rare to get if ever.  I would definitely give this book a 4.  It’s worth the purchase price and worth passing on to others to read as well.  It’s a great read for both male and female alike.  I believe it shows a good battle that that many will deal with when they first get hired on if they don’t have the support network in place.

Firefighting is all about family and for some it is their only family.  The beginning years of a firefighter are so varied and chaotic as all the changes take place.  This book did a good job of dealing with some of the uniqueness of a probie firefighter and personally showed me the chaos of starting out in wildland.

Congrats to our First Giveaway Winner
