HeroRide

The longer I have the blog the more cool sites I find. More organizations getting on facebook is helping a lot as well. I found nobleheroes.org this way. Their mission is to help first responders and their families in the days, weeks and years after a severe or permanent disability. I really liked their mission the minute I found the page. I will contact them soon to get a full interview to post here.

But they have an upcoming fundraising event and I wanted to make sure everyone had time to get involved if they are in the area. You can read the press release below.

HeroRide Scheduled: Benefiting Fayette County Firefighter Brad Boemanns

(Tyrone, GA) Starting at 11:30 AM on Saturday, May 12, motorcyclists from across the Southeastern United States will assemble at Wings N’ Things on Senioa Road in Tyrone, GA to raise money for Fayette County Fireman Brad Boemanns who was injured October 29, 2011 in the line of duty.

Warrior Movie Review

I told you earlier this week that I got a couple of tickets to screen the new movie WARRIOR and how excited I was to go see it with hubby. By the way you still have until August 29th to nominate the warrior in your life for a grand prize of a private hometown screening. Seeing as we’re all firefighter wives here we’ve all got at least one person to nominate easily. Or maybe the warrior is YOU for all the battling you do for your family?! Just get that nomination in quick.

For those of you unfamiliar with the movie, it’s about two estranged brothers who are training for the fight of their lives. Between financial issues, major personal issues and the problems that tore them apart, much more than MMA is brought to the ring at sparta.

I grew up watching boxing with my Dad and we watch the MMA pay-per-views whenever possible. My daughter also wrestles (son will this year!). I love a good fight and I’m a sucker for the underdog in the cage, on the mat or in a movie. Just something about that fighting spirit and never stopping until you achieve your goal that gets me every time.

Hubby and I rarely get out to the movies just the two of us. I know all you parents can relate, it’s difficult to bump it up on the priority list. I was happy not to be forcing a chick flick on him here.  However, if you aren’t into the fights then it’s full of some serious eye candy girls! Hey, there are ring girls for the guys too. But if you can’t watch the fights on tv then I’m not sure if you’ll love Warrior as much as I did. It’s full of awesome fight scenes.

Even though I know the fights were choreographed (duh, it’s a movie), I was still cringing, ducking and wanting to yell at the screen. I’m not very quiet when I watch sports. lol They did a great job with making the fight scenes look real.

The story line was surprisingly good. I wasn’t expecting a packed story line for this genre of movie. I know it’s technically a drama, but with the theme of the movie I expect it to be more heavy on the action and leave it at a basic story. There were quite a few battles going on that weren’t physical. Conflicts in personal relationships, work issues, broken family dynamics, just like in real life.  Yet with all of the stories going on it’s easy to follow. It’s not jumping around from person to person, everything is interconnected.

The humor was great. Tom and Tess have some very funny moments. She cracked me up quite a few times with her digs. Their marriage comes off realistically because of the joking while dealing with major problems.  You have to love the high school principal as well.

I loved the movie. I definitely recommend seeing it in theaters so you can cringe and duck with the blows. I’m looking forward to my son seeing it, I know he’s going to like it a lot too.

Warrior opens next Friday, September 9th. Hopefully, not long after we will hear that someone has created a true sparta ;)

For the record, it’s 3 months until wrestling season. Momma will start their training this weekend. This movie gave me the bug. I can’t wait to see them on the mat again!

We Are All Warriors

There is a new movie coming out on September 9th called “Warrior” that I’m super excited about. As soon as I saw the trailer for it I knew I wanted to see it. I like a good underdog story and I love MMA! Perfect combo of both.

To help promote the movie they contacted me about a cool promotion they are running called We Are All Warriors. You can submit what you fight for or what an everyday warrior in your life fights for. Submissions can be made by video or essay.

The grand prize winner will get a private screening of the movie in their hometown with up to 50 friends! Oh boy wouldn’t you be the hit of the department for winning that one? ;) There are also 9 first place prizes of a warrior prize pack valued at about $100. Not too shabby for doing a quick essay or video.

I’m posting this real quick because the deadline for submissions is August 29 and that is coming up fast. At the time of posting this there are only 261 entries so those are some great odds!

I’ll post my review of the movie this weekend. I GOT TICKETS TO PRIVATE SCREENING ON THURSDAY! WOOHOO, date night!

My Brother Has Fallen

My Brother has fallen; no, I don’t know his name.
Have not the same parents still family all the same.
He lives in this town, I live in another,
It doesn’t really matter ’cause this man is my Brother.

My Brother I call him, yet I’ve never seen his face.
I have brothers and sisters all over the place!
You see I am a Firefighter and our families are one.

Around the world, a brotherhood of unity,
A closeness, a bond, most people don’t see.
I’ll watch your back; she’ll watch mine
“You go, I go,” time after time

His family’s my family, her family theirs,
We’re part of one family where everyone cares,
I’ll look after your kids, please look in on my wife,
Should that day finally come when I laid down my life.

We dedicate our lives to helping our fellow man,
Living day after day doing all that we can,
Where ever we’re needed whether nighttime or day,
To save life of another we’ll step in harms way.

My Brother has fallen doing what he loved best,
And among the Honored, he now stands with the rest
For a mile in dress uniforms here everyone stands,
For my Brother has fallen, God into your hands.

Poem That Spoke Right To Me

I was perusing the firewife boards the other night and this poem had been posted. It was almost like I’d read it before. But nope, haven’t read it, just living it. It was written one day by another firewife as a form of therapy. I’m so happy she gave me permission to post it for all of you to read.

Just a Firefighter’s Wife

I sleep alone at night, so you can sleep with peace of mind…

I am the woman sitting alone at the little league game, while you hold your husband’s hand…

I sit alone at church so your house is spared from a roaring fire…

Yes, I give up my husband to who’s need is grave and dire…

I am the woman who puts her career on hold, so her kids can have at least one parent home…

While you have dinner with your husband I quietly miss my own…

I am the woman who can fix a pipe, paint a room and change a flat…

All things I had to learn along the way to save my back…

I am not a hero, don’t get paid and don’t save lives…

Don’t mind me I’m just a firefighter’s wife…

Love this Tribute Video

I’m graphically challenged which is too bad, I’d love to see something like this at our banquet!  Cool tune’s and love the pic’s changing with the beat.

Today I am Still Thankful

I wonder if it will ever NOT be weird to have him gone on a holiday?  Probably not, even when I prepare for it.  You just really can’t get over that little piece missing no matter where the celebration is happening.  We have a big dinner planned for tomorrow when he’s home and we’re doing it up different by grilling and smoking the turkey.  Something to look forward to :)

But with how much life changes each year I wanted to post things I’m thankful for today because it’s so easy to look at the negative.

** I’m thankful for his job that he still loves.

** I’m thankful for the time his job gives us as a family to go run off camping together at odd times

** I’m thankful for the fact that his job gives us time together during weekdays to go shopping or to the range or other things that are too busy on weekends to enjoy much.

** I’m thankful for the support of our many friends and especially the other wives.  No one gets that you aren’t “complaining” when you just have to vent about work, like another wife going through the same thing daily.

** Most importantly I’m thankful for every morning he comes home from work, even if I wanted to sleep in on the weekend.  I’ll take every day I can get :)

Happy Thanksgiving!  What are you thankful for?

Back Home Again

The pager makes it’s beeping noise
The scanner comes to life.
You see excitement on his face
As he goes off to fight.

Regardless what you’re doing
Or whatever the current plan.
All you hear is “later hun”
As he gets those keys in hand.

You say a little prayer
That God will keep him safe.
That with all the pride and bravery
No one will make a mistake.

You know those men are Brothers,
And fiercely will protect,
The lives of each other and others–
They will truly give their best.

You and your family,
Are both loyal and true.
You keep each other company,
Waiting for him to return to you.

And when that front door opens,
With “Honey, I’m home” again,
You thank the lord he’s back home ok,
Your brave and strong fireman.

Poem for A Fireman’s Wife

Thank you to a visitor that sent me this poem to post. If you have a poem of your own that’s fire related I’d love to post it and give you credit.

A Fireman’s Wife

A Fireman’s wife, the Padre said,
has nights of fear and days of dread
as she hopes against hope
that she can ably cope,
when the dark visions arise
from their blackened night guise
to tell of the dangers that he befell
when he answered the call of the bell.
And in her heart she hides a dread
that the day may bring a car of red
with the Padre wearing eyes full of sorrow
that say that upon the morrow
her husband, her life, will not return
and her soul will burn, her soul will burn.
Burdens more than a wife should endure
but her motives purely simple and simply pure.
She Loves Him.
Or in tears she will quietly be by his side
that day when a comrade has fallen, has died,
because it was his friend, the one who fell
and did not again hear the ringing of the bell.

She must show him her love but not the hurt that she does feel,
or the pain that she quiet suffers when from his grief he does heal,
or nary tell him that she kneels every dark night
after sunset, before the morn’s dewy light
willing his return to their happy home.
(Come home, come home, oh please come home.)
To the wife, the Padre quietly went on,
I vow the fear and the dread will be gone
when the morning sun comes with no car of red
and he is home safe, safe in his bed.
Show him your love and show him your pride
held within your heart that you feel inside
because he is your husband and he is the one
who does a hard job, one that must be done.
In a garden of colour that lifted her soul
he brought her some comfort,(which was his goal.)
The Padre said to the fireman’s wife
“A woman who chooses to live such a life
must accept times full of fun and also full of pain
as well as times full of sun and times full of rain.
But know that the yoke that you quietly wear
is also a great burden that he too must share.
Be content with some comfort, for it be true
and do not be troubled nor your life should you rue
for your husband though he leads a valiant life,
holds higher than the heavens, you, his wife
and he would be resolute and first to agree
that you are the much braver, far braver than he.”
