FireWifeKatie’s Fun Necklaces

I’ve followed Katie on Firewife Katie for a couple of years now. It’s always refreshing to read a blog about how someone else is dealing with this crazy life, let alone all the really cool things on her blog. She’s very artsy and I LOVE THAT! Pictures of her creations around the house are always posted for us to see. Such as this incredible wreath for all seasons she created. Martha Stewart be damned, I think Katie’s got it all over Miss Martha and comes across MUCH more personably ;)

When she posted to the forums that she’d created a couple of fun new necklaces. She even gave the instructions…but I haven’t been in a crafty mood in quite a while. I just don’t take the time to create things anymore. So I was very happy to see she’d created an etsy site and is selling the necklaces. Now that is more like it! lol

I went straight to Katie for a couple of questions.

1. What made you start the etsy site?

A little while ago, I learned how to make these glazed pendants as a craft to teach to a youth group. I made one for myself, to show the kids what the finished product would look like. The fire department Maltese cross seemed like the perfect backdrop for my own necklace — a nice, subtle way to show my support for the fire department. I realized that there were a lot of women who support firefighters in my life, so I made some for them as well. The store evolved from there, after I shared the craft with some fellow fire wives.

2. What product(s) are you offering right now? Future products in the works?

Currently I have Maltese cross pendants available, paired with an aluminum washer that can be personalized with up to 14 characters. I plan on adding other designs to my shop including symbols supporting other EMS organizations, as well as some fashion designs.

The necklaces are very affordable. They will make great gifts for your firewife or for us wives to give to our friends. Bookmark it and order early for that special holiday gift.

Firefighter Christmas Cards

Matt from Stonehouse Collection sent me an offer to pass on to all of you readers. 10% off and free shipping! I’m looking forward to getting my order in early. Although hubby did say that if the cards are filled out and still sitting on the kitchen table in January, I will never get cards again. lol Yeah, it’s happened more than once {hangs head in shame}

These cards are so fun and definitely our families style. I can’t pick just one, so I’ll definitely be getting two different styles…or more. Let me just pull that Christmas card list out and see the numbers I can send out.

To get the discount, load your cart with the Christmas cards from Stonehouse Collection that you just have to have this year. You can even get some personalized for the station to send out. Then use the discount code FIREFIGHTER10 when checking out. It will give you 10% off your order and free shipping. It’s that easy.

Dad’s Day Gifts for Your Fireman

It’s getting to be last minute, but I have the kids shopping for Father’s Day gifts today.  Many of his t-shirts are getting dingy and I’ve been wanting to get rid of them, so I have them shopping for new t-shirts lol  I was sad to see that the site I’ve really liked to shop at and browse has changed direction.  They have some great 9-11 anniversary commemorative shirts and gifts now though.

Sites I’ve sent the kids to look at include:
NW Firestore
DnT Designs
Bonfire Designs
Black Helmet Apparel

Previously I’ve gotten quite a few books for him. His favorite book has been B-Shifter: A Firefighter’s Memoir I’ve been wanting to get him to do a review and it just dawned on me if I type out some questions he’ll answer them. lol Guess I’ll get on that. This book has been passed around the department so you know it’s a keeper. Of course it does help that we’re B shift ;)

What fire related presents have you given and they loved?  Where’s your favorite place to shop for the guys?

The Fireman’s Wife Book Review

This one could get a little lengthy. I probably should have set up a couple of reviews and started when I was only half way through the book. I also know many of you have been waiting for quite a while for me to get this posted. Sorry for the wait.

For the record, I really did enjoy The Fireman’s Wife. From start to finish. But that doesn’t mean I agreed with the majority she said or wasn’t annoyed by certain aspects of it here and there. Some are just personal decisions and a big difference in personality as well.

See the book was written AFTER she got that horrible call we all worry about getting. So all those fears she’d had were justified. How many of us have the same worries? Anyone not raising their hand is a big, fat liar, so reach high. lol But, thankfully very few of our worries will ever be justified with a major incident happening. The major theme throughout the book is how she never wanted to marry someone in the field because of this major worry she knew she would have. But again, this is written after there is an accident in their life so looking back in hindsight to write the book it would be very easy to run with that idea in your head as the common theme.

Now even with our obvious personality differences I enjoyed hearing another wife’s point of view. Our lives are very different, but even with how different they are we both deal with the same issues. OT, missed meals, rough calls (especially the kids), not being able to plan your day after shift because you don’t know if they can stay awake. There were many times I was laughing out loud as something sounded so familiar it was just a big THANK GOD I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE!

A big difference and one that is a major one for me is there has never been a time I wish he didn’t become a firefighter. Ever. Not when our Chief died, not when little injuries have happened to our friends, not when he was a volunteer and I was raising little one’s with him rarely home (or felt like it so many weeks). The thought has never once crossed my mind that I wish he didn’t do it. Because as I’ve said before, if he wasn’t doing it then he wouldn’t be the man I love. And I’ve seen that man that was miserable not working as a firefighter, so that was a big thing that did annoy me.

The end of the book was rough. I don’t know how I could watch my firefighter possibly not be able to return to work. The support she received brought tears to my eyes over and over again, because this is truly how it works. Reading her struggle with how to help, when to back off, when to push and having the Chief there to explain how things will work and what others have gone through when it’s happened to them. It was heartbreaking to go through that with her and know that it could happen with a serious injury at any time. It would be so devastating to hear that he may never be able to work a fire again.

It’s a keeper and I’ll reread it. I’m not a rereader so that says a lot.

So what did you think of the book? And what book should I read next? I saw some books on my friends coffee table, so I am thinking of making her bring me some to the girl’s night party. You want more reviews right?

Book on Way to Review

Hubby said he had a few things to order from amazon soon so I asked him to order The Fireman’s Wife so I could review it for all of you. I’m excited it will be here next week. Just wish it was coming before we head to my FIL’s for a visit. I usually get a little bit of time to just chill out while we are there and they don’t mind if I grab a book for an hour.

I’m looking forward to reading the book, then giving a review. If I like the book and find value in it, then my plan is to do some giveaways and get copies into readers hands as well.

Let me know if there are other books you’ve enjoyed about fire service, fire life, etc. I know hubby snagged a book for himself as well and I plan on getting a review from him about it. If he likes it then maybe it’s something you can buy as a gift for your man ;)

Favorite Tshirt Site

Rescue Tees is my absolute favorite site to order for hubby from. In fact I went over there today and hadn’t been in a few months as I’m trying to watch my spending. Went there of course so I could make this post and now I’ll be buying him some new one’s.

He has a few old one’s I need to toss out, so it’s a good excuse to go shopping!

Rescue Tees has very fast shipping and everything comes in a ton of sizes. I know the sweatshirt hubby bought me from here is never going to wear out. It’s really good quality and the prices are very affordable for such custom designs.

I wish they had an affiliate program for promoting them.

Shop for Everyone

This site has something for everyone. Literally. Shop for hubby, you, the kids. Clothes, mugs, usb flash drives, flasks, clocks, the sky is the limit. Then after you choose your product you totally customize it with the image you want and any writing on it.

The prices are super affordable and with how many of the things are usable items, you can shop for all the firemen in your life. Start buying those Christmas presents early and stocking them up now. Everyone can get a flask for Christmas when it’s only $18.99. I know I’m going to tell hubby about them so he can start purchasing them now and be ahead of the game by December!

Personalized Fire Dept Gifts

Watching Fireproof

Well this Fireproof came highly recommended, even by some of you here on my blog. And I’m a movie junky, so believe me I can sit through a lot of things like poor acting and such.

But this is like watching a lifetime channel movie. WOW, the acting is disrupting to the storyline. And I am not religious, but not offended by religion. But this was quite over-the-top for me.

Yes, lots of good stuff in it, but I’m so glad I didn’t have hubby watch it. Now we have gone through our own serious issues (not cheating, but total lack of communication) and I can agree with a lot of the stuff going on when the religious spin is taken out. Again, good messages going on and boy can I see so many aspects we’ve gone through. It’s just a difficult watch. lol

I told hubby just 2 days ago that we are going on vacation. I just got a big check and I really need to pay off bills, but the two of us have got to get away and regroup. Get away and focus only on us. So I told him that and of course he’s all for it as we hate to spend time in the sun with no responsibilities. ROFL But watching this movie right now is just reinforcing that it’s very important we do this as soon as possible.

We buried my Great-Uncle last week and that is 2 loved one’s in the last 7 months and our Chief. I have to stick hard to my new life motto of no regrets. You don’t get to go back and say and do things, you must do them right now.

I’m watching the end and it’s ending really well. Thankfully I get to see hubby a few minutes tomorrow so I can say some things that should be said. Every relationship should be Fireproof.
