Side Jobs or Hobbies

I know that many have no choice but to work a second job around their firefighter gig. Thankfully we are not in that position, but that does mean he has quite the free time to fill. Well he’s got a new hobby and it’s not as expensive as the one we picked up a year ago. lol

A little over a year ago we went in and got our concealed carry permits and then the gun purchasing started. Oh man, that can get expensive when you really don’t know what you want. So there have been buying and selling of a few until we got to the one’s we are very happy with right now.  But that’s just the start of the spending as we usually make a date to go to the range once a week and ammo ain’t cheap!  It’s really darn cold right now so we’re down to barely going.

He’s been buying up a lot of extras and not being happy with some of them. He’s a researching and knows a ton of information on everything before he makes a purchase. So figured out how to start making his own holsters. Mostly out of plastic but he has added leather to some. They look great. In fact he just finished this bright pink one for me. I got to order it custom and double-check the design before he cut it out, of course. Then had it custom fit to my hip.

For weeks now he’s been out in his little shop working on different holster designs. I have two plus a double mag holder and I have no idea how many he has now. I can’t keep up with all of them. lol  I’ve made fun of him when he comes in the house and told him to go back out to his cold dungeon. But it did get to the point it was weird because of how much he was out there. I’d finally get a little lonely and go sit in the cold with him.  I can only do that for so long before my fingers feel like they will break off. Plus I get bored as he’s not a great conversationalist when he’s concentrating.

Which has left me with more time to work without feeling guilty for the laptop being open when he’s home. Cool beans!  Yeah for hobbies!

I know many years ago our doctor actually prescribed his getting a hobby. lol  I know it’s helped him with the downtime of the job.  With winter upon us it limits the other hobbies available right now. Sure we have a lot of little house projects that need to be done, but those aren’t fun for an ex-carpenter to do. He needed something fun and this is definitely fitting the bill.

He made me stop planning the company, website and promotion for the holster company because he worries if he started taking orders it would then become work and not fun. But you know I’ve already got it figured out in my head.  I’m just waiting to hear the word go ;)

We’re both considering getting ours — him for a hobby, me just because. This post was great in many ways. Thanks!

I’ll say that it’s taken a year for me to start carrying. I’ve literally just started carrying more regularly in the last month. I grew up with a Mom that was freaked out by guns. It took me a good while to get over hearing her in my head when I went to the range, let alone having the guns in the house. It’s fun to go to the range. It’s given us a hobby that doesn’t revolve around food!

My husband has 2 jobs and even though I know he’s doing it for us I’m not sure how I feel about him always working. I feel the strain on our relationship. Is this normal for a wife of a fireman?

Somehow it doesn’t surprise that a tough woman such as yourself would be interested in guns.:) I’m still trying out many things to find a fun hobby, but my partner in crime almost shouted “NO” when I mentioned guns!

Thank you, I think? lol It took quite a while to get my Mom’s voice out of my head about them. She hates guns.

I think it depends on where you are at as to how common it is. So many areas aren’t making enough to live on with the cost of living high. 2 jobs really does put a strain on things. It’s rough because you know he possibly needs to do it and you feel guilty because you get angry you don’t see them. Before he was hired on he worked construction and always had a long commute. With volunteering on top of that there were some months I was ready to lose my mind. Picking fights just because there was no communication going on. Of course, since it’s difficult to converse if you don’t see much of each other. lol
