Often we struggle as fire families to make time to do things together.  For some of you, the fire service gets nearly every free moment – life shouldn’t be that way. (*ahem*  I will not call you out so harshly, but if you’re not giving your spouse and family time they need and deserve you may regret it later… we promise forever but we really only have today!)  We all get so wrapped up in the lifestyle and schedule that a lot of us end up sitting around in the same room on down days, noses glued to our devices.

Don’t we give up enough time already as families in the fire service?!

Irony is us using social media to urge you to take a break from social media.  I actually laugh as I type this.  The world wide web is awesome and we’ve used it to save and encourage marriages… but we also know that we all need to step back from time to time.

But truly, all things in moderation totally applies to your devices.  Society has become so overly dependant on devices at school, work and it overflows into the home.  Are you spending too much time face down in a phone, tablet or laptop?

SNAP OUT OF IT!  Step away from those devices!

How much time are you wasting on technology, when your family is right in front of you?  Are you busy reading up on the latest Facebook drama, watching the highlight reel of someone else’s life through the perfect pictures they share or clicking away at some game… nearly constantly?  Setting limits for device usage across the board for the whole family is a great idea – there is MUCH MORE to life than those devices and you’re letting it pass you by.  You can set an example for your family, now.

This Summer we challenge you with our Summer Unplugged Series.

Get out this Summer.  Every day in the month of July we’ll share with you a great activity to get you UNPLUGGED and OUTDOORS.  Activities can be done alone, as a family or you can make it a date!  We’ll stop you right now with excuses – you don’t need a ton of time or money for some of these activities…. only the willingness to commit to stepping away from your device.  Having a family and spouse that you can pry away from technology may be another story… we get it, really… we do!  Turn off the wifi and promise to turn it back on after your choice of activity 😉

What activities would you add to our list?

Click through our list below to see all of our unplugged ideas for Summer.   Pick your favorites and spend some much needed time, unplugged.  We’ll share more with each day as we post out on our Facebook pages- we don’t want you to have to give up your vices… um, devices that is, all day every day… we just hope it’s a reminder to share a little of your time each day with your spouse and family.

A small town girl from Southwest Georgia who happens to value your marriage as much as she does her own. She is married to a firefighter who was a volunteer for several years, then transitioned into a career fireman the same month they married in 2008, and he is now a Captain at his full-time Department. They have two daughters, have been in the FFW family since 2012 and know marriage takes a lot of work, even when it's in the best seasons.
