It’s a Family Affair at Ohio Fire and EMS Expo
Bring your wife to the Ohio Fire and EMS Expo? Well YES! Of course. Firefighting is a family affair. You work alongside your second family of brothers and sisters at the firehouse but your first family is at home, proudly supporting you the whole way. And when something happens to one of your family members, your fire family is there to support.
Think about it. How many times have you moved and had some of your firefighting brothers and sisters come and help? Or put on a deck? Or had someone cover for you so you didn’t miss the first day of kindergarten or your sons first time starting as quarterback? Yep. Firefighting is family.
And this year a couple of our Ohio Fire Families need your support at the Ohio Fire and EMS Expo and Firefighter Cancer Foundation “Cornhole for Cancer” Fundraiser supporting the family of Bryan Oiler, a Columbus Firefighter who passed away this week after a battle with cancer. And Christine Pabst, wife of Lt. Chris Pabst of Plain Township Fire (is that right?) who is fighting lymphoma.
We are looking for teams of 2 to play cornhole and raise funds for these families and to join us for a silent auction benefit that evening at Park Street Cantina.
Wait, who am I and why am I telling you this? My name is Lori Mercer and I am the wife of Whitehall Firefighter Dan Mercer and I am the “Chief Fire Wife” over at FirefighterWife.com. Just over a year ago we launched this website after we heard many fire marriages were struggling and many fire wives were feeling lonely and actually angry at the fire service for stealing their husbands away. I used to feel that way too. True story and I know, completely irrational. But I had no other wise fire wives around to put their arm around my shoulder and show me a better way. After many years of working through this alone, I realized that my husband was BORN to be a firefighter and that’s exactly where I need to love him and make this crazy lifestyle work for our family of 6.
Over at FirefighterWife.com we started talking about these struggles and successes….and the fire wives showed up! Almost 19,000 of them to be exact. And FirefighterWife.com is here to serve fire families.
And for all you Ohio firefighters who ask my husband the infamous question all the time, I have your answer. That infamous question is “What is this website your wife runs that my wife is always following? Are they over there bashing us?” The answer is absolutely not. In fact we have a no bashing, no drama policy at our site. We are here to build up fire marriages and encourage fire wives. Period. And we are saving marriages everyday. Wives are understanding the fire service and their firemen better and their marriages are improving.
This is why we want you to bring her with you to the expo (or at least the fundraiser). Serving each other is important in our fire family and exactly why we are teaming up with Ohio Fire and EMS Expo and the Firefighter Cancer Foundation to make this event a success.
So yes! Bring your wife. Make her feel welcome in the fire family. Show her all the ways you stay safe on the job. And watch your marriage grow even stronger. Make it a date night. You never know. She might just be an amazing corn hole player! And we’d love to meet you all in person.
